1 Start: Fitzroy Falls National Park Visitors Centre
Directions: Fitzroy Falls VC on Nowra Road, 20 minutes east of Bowral.
This National Parks visitors centre offers a 150m board walk to a magnificent waterfall. There are a further 2 bush walks (80min & 2.5h return) where you can see the full magnificence of the triple waterfall. Views of the un-spoilt rainforest down Yurrunga Creek may remind you of life on earth in the Jurassic period. The centre's interpretive signs and shop are informative. Café, outdoor picnic area, disabled access and toilets are available.
1 to 2: Fitzroy Falls to Manning Lookout
Directions: Turn left out of the visitor's centre. After about 2.5k turn left again at the Manning Lookout sign and follow the dirt road for 2k to the parking area.
An easy bush walk from the car park brings you to an outstanding view of Kangaroo Valley. The sandstone plateau supports forest, woodland and light scrub. The trees are predominantly stringybark, peppermint, scribbly gum and old man banksia. The many shrubs along the paths include curly sedge, sunshine wattle, broad-leaved hakea, trigger plant and mountain devil. From the lookout notice the height of the Hawkesbury sandstone escapements, 118m then below the temperate rainforest that draws your eye down to the river plains and the lush green pastures of distant dairy farms. Great place for a picnic under the shady trees.
2 to 3: Manning Lookout to Barrengarry
Directions: Return to Nowra Road and turn left towards Kangaroo Valley. Stop at the Barrengarry store.
Stop off at the hamlet of Barrengarry, where you can visit the quaint old general store & post office. It claims to offer "the world's best pies", certainly this location offers glorious views of Australia's most beautiful valley. Here you can see the National Trust landscape, considered the principal area of outstanding natural beautiful in the Illawarra & Shoalhaven regions. This landscape is over 300 million years old.
3 to 4: Barrengarry to Kangaroo Valley Village
Directions: Continue east over Hampden Bridge to Kangaroo Valley village.
You will receive a warm welcome by locals at this unique historic village with its National Trust listed buildings, historic shops and pub. The Friendly Inn sells drinks, food and local wines such as Yarrawa Estate. There are excellent local galleries showing local artists work, a fine woodcraft shop, a pottery and various gift shops. For breakfast, lunch or dinner we will spoil you for choice at the cafes, pub, club or fine dining restaurants. Stay overnight at one of our gorgeous B&Bs, self contained cottages or camping and caravan parks. See our Visitors Information Centre in the Village. Parking can be found at either end of the village where there are toilets nearby.
This is also a great place to start the Historic Walk and explore Kangaroo Valley's seven National trust listings and historic buildings.
4 to 5: Kangaroo Valley Village to the Historic Cemetery
Directions: Drive through the village East towards Nowra for 2k. The cemetery is on the right.
Once you leave the village you pass through the hamlet formerly known as Maguires (site of the original post office and general store, race course and showground). Take time to stop off at the National Trust listed historic cemetery with many early settlers' graves. This site also provides you with striking views across the river plains to the sandstone escarpments to the north.
5 to 6 Finish: Historic Cemetery to Cambewarra Lookout
Directions: Continue along Moss Vale Road for 10k up Cambewarra Mountain towards Nowra. At the top of the mountain turn left up Cambewarra Lookout Road and follow the signs for 2k to the tea rooms.
Cambewarra Mountain (Fire Mountain) 650m. This spectacular lookout gives you a 146 km uninterrupted view of the South Coast coastline - one of the longest panoramas in Australia. Picnic on the grassy mountain top or better still enjoy an afternoon tea at the café (open seven days a week).
